Greatest Guitar Legends of All Time

The guitar personifies modern music you can find guitar in jazz, rock, metal, country and almost every genre of music played on the radio.  Young musicians learn to play guitar in the hopes of becoming the next rock star.  While there are plenty or above average guitar players there are only a handful who are true artists who have mastered their instruments.  These are the guitar players who have blazed trails and created new sounds, they stand above the others as the greatest guitar legends of all time.

Jimi Hendrix

Hands down one of the most creative guitar players of the 20th century Jimi Hendrix’s life ended much too soon he changed how the electric guitar is played.  He used everything at his disposal including distortion, feedback and incredible skill to create a new sound.  Hendrix couldn’t read or write music himself he rose to fame in a very short time and still influences musicians today.  Here is Jimi live at Woodstock.

Jimmy Page

As the guitar player for the iconic band Led Zeppelin his playing helped define heavy metal.  Paged defied limitations and explored the guitar in a way that no one before or since has tried.  Pioneering the backwards echo, playing the guitar with a cello bow were just some of the ways Page defined rock music.  As part of the band they created some of rocks biggest selling albums, they were also the pioneers of stadium rock.  Every guitar player since the 70’s has been influenced by Jimmy Page.

BB King

One of the best blues guitarist the world has ever seen, BB King had legions of fans all over the world.  King played 300 shows a year for decades and at every one of them he awed fans with his ability to bend a note, near perfect timing and singing with incredible emotion.  He played “Lucille” with musicians from every genre imaginable and he was what other musicians aspire to be.

Angus Young

Angus Young first emerged on the scene as the guitar player for AC/DC at 14 years old and is one of hard rock’s emulated guitar players.  Although the band made more than a dozen albums they will always be best known for “Back in Black” in the early 80’s.  It was with that album that Young became known for his riffs and tight playing style.  If you have ever seen him on stage he does all of this flawlessly while jumping all over the stage.

These are just a handful of the many talented guitar players that define greatness.  There are greats throughout every genre of music whether you want the driving riffs of hard rock or the melody of an acoustic.

Canadian Music Festivals

Canada may not be the first destination that you think of when it comes to music festivals, but when summertime rolls around it is time to head north for some incredible music.  There are Canadian music festivals that take place all year long, but the summer is when you will get the best outdoor concerts and see some of the biggest names in music.  So in no particular order here are some of the best Canadian music festivals to add to your lineup.

Festival d’Ete

Taking place on the historic Plains of Abraham from July 5-15 this is ten days of solid music and it is one of Canada’s biggest festivals.  With more than a million concert goers flocking here every year you can find some of the biggest draws in the music business.  Everyone from the Rolling Stones to the heavy sounds of Metallica have graced the stages.

NXNE

While there are many music festivals that take place in Toronto over the course of the summer this is by far the biggest and the baddest.  From June 8-17 this is more than just a music festival, there is comedy, gaming, interactive displays and so much more.  The event takes place at the Port Land’s festival site and the Toronto club scene is packed with up and coming music artists.  Prepare yourself for a great time.

Ottawa Blues Fest

Head to the capital for Canada Day and stick around for the Blues Fest.  Taking place from July 5-15 this is 10 days of solid music rocking the LeBreton Flats, and it is far more than just blues.  You will find acts from all genres of music and you’re but a stone’s throw from downtown and Parliament Hill.  While there is a focus here on Canadian music you will find acts from all over the world including headliners like Blues legend B.B. King.  Here are some highlights from last year’s festival.

Chasing Summer

Summer can be painfully short in Canada so Canadians like to celebrate when it is here.  For two days the first weekend in August head to Calgary for the largest EDM event in the country.  With fall just around the corner this festival is all about celebrating our favorite but short season.  With the rockies looming in the background slap on a comfortable pair of shoes and start dancing.

There are dozens of music festivals that take place across the country each year and these are but a handful there are still the Montreal Jazz Festival, O’Sheaga, Heavy Montreal, and the MEME festival that should have made this list.  Check with tourism Canada to see where you can catch your favorite music this summer.

Why You Need to Add Burning Man to Your Bucket List

Burning Man is not an arts festival. It is a community of people from around the globe. Burning Man carries with it a whirlwind of culture and it is an experience that you will find yourself yearning for, for years to come and will not find anywhere else on the planet.  That is what Burning Man is. So, let me give you a quick rundown of the reasons why you need to add Burning Man to your bucket list

Be One with the Landscape

Burning Man’s ephemeral location is a prehistoric, dry, lakebed in the middle of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. During this experience, the location is called Black Rock City. If you’ve never let yourself escape the city life, the walled viewpoint, the feeling of confinement that is today’s urban habitat, you are going to find yourself dissolving into the air to be one with everything at Burning Man.

It is one of the most striking places on earth. You feel like you’re on a different planet altogether. It becomes an even more surreal feeling after 60,000 people arrive.

Escape the Infinite Advertisement

There are no salespersons screaming their products at you. There are no bright flashing pictures of what the corporate world thinks you might want to buy. No one will try to smash a poster of Coke or McDonald’s in your face. You will leave behind the world of consumerism and electronic communication that plagues our society today.

The only thing for sale at Burning Man is ice, which is sold to benefit the local schools and charities. Gift economy, the idea that people share food as well a, resources and experience with their friends and strangers, not accepting anything in return, is what drives the festival’s economy.

The Immersive World of Arts & Color

At the Burning Man, you will see art pieces on every corner. Iconic, decades old traditions formed by the generations of free spirits before you, will be there to expand your views of what you thought you knew about art.

For just one example, take Dance-Dance Immolation, where players are dressed in fireproof proximity suits and if you dance well, flames burst into the sky in celebration but if you don’t, be ready to be showered in a dance of fire itself as the flames are now aimed at you!

People and Culture

Burning Man is what it is because of the amazing people and their rich culture that it attracts. The events for you to participate in are unlimited. As is the diversity in thought, culture and ethnicity of the people that you are interacting with. Scientists, chefs, DJ’s, teachers, doctors, actors and lawyers are just a few examples of the type of professions and lifestyles that people come from.

The only real way to explain the mind-blowing perspective shift this experience can bring is to go there yourself and just experience it.

It is nearly impossible to encapsulate and put into words, what the Burning Man is. Take this for the short version why it needs to be on your bucket list. You owe it to yourself to live through it at least once in your lifetime.
